The same reason why petrol/"gasoline" is taxed so much, same with alcohol... If drugs were legal the government would be raking in so much revenue! But you cannot measure "morality" in economic terms. Also, it's absolutely ludicrous how tax from petrol is not being used for pro-environment sustainability projects, and tax from alcohol is not fully allocated towards drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs. It's because we're human love...
